Eldon Whitley, a McGregor civic leader, passed away Saturday August 1, 2020, at the age of 74. Visitation will be 6 to 8 P.M. Friday Aug. 7, 2020, in the Parlor of Grace Gardens Funeral Home, 8220 Woodway Drive. Private inurnment will be in Mt. Marion Cemetery in Strawn, Texas.
Mr. Whitley was born May 1, 1946, in Mineral Wells, Texas, the son of the late Ferman Delmar and Sara Faye (Kyle) Whitley. He began his education in a one room school in Brazos, Texas. Later the family moved to Breckenridge, Texas where he was a 1964 graduate of Breckenridge High School. Upon graduation, he enrolled in Cisco Jr. College from 1964 to 1965. In 1966 he enrolled in UT Arlington and graduated in 1968 with a BA in History.
On January 21, 1967, he married the former Mary Fellers at Southside Baptist Church in Hamilton, Texas.
He enjoyed working with his father budding pecan trees. He was employed with the Texas Highway Department, during the summers. In 1967 he worked at Martin Sprocket & Gear and later while attending college he worked at General Motors in Arlington until August of 1968.
After graduating from UT Arlington, he began his career with Texas Power & Light in Lufkin, Texas in December 1968. This job took him to Rockwall, Brownwood, Killeen, Mineral Wells, McGregor, and Waco. While in McGregor, he was manager of Texas Power and Light Company and took an active part in many McGregor civic activities. In 2001 he retired.
He was a Methodist who enjoyed boating and any kind of water sports, hunting, cat fishing on the Whitley home place on the Brazos River, telling tall tales and playing many practical jokes.
Also preceding him in death were brothers-in-law Freddy Fellers, Jimmy Fellers, John Fellers, James Fellers; Sisters-in-law Vera Alice Fellers Boggs & Catherine Fellers; Grandson David Noble; Niece Anita Fellers Lynn.
Survivors include his ex-wife Mary Fellers Whitley; a son David Whitley and wife Dawn; a daughter SheliaWhitley Pomerenke and husband Alan; a sister Linda Whitley Heatherington and husband Derwood; grandchildren Nicholas Whitley, Maegan Noble, Kyle and wife Lacy, Breanna Pomerenke, Avery Pomerenke; great grandchildren, David and Addison; brothers-in-law Cecil Fellers & wife Jana, Curtis Fellers & wife Janice; cousins, nieces & nephews.
