Elmer Charles Waldschmidt, Jr., known affectionately to everyone as "Sonny," passed away peacefully on April 21, 2026, in Waco, Texas. Surrounded by the family who meant the world to him, Sonny began his final journey, leaving behind a legacy as enduring as the millions of miles he traveled during his long career in long-haul trucking.
Born on December 17, 1939, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Sonny’s life was a masterclass in duty and devotion. While attending Perry High School, his talent as an artist earned him a scholarship; a dream he set aside when he was drafted into the United States Army. Though he traded his paintbrush for a uniform, his creative spirit never dimmed. He remained a lifelong artist who found peace in drawing and painting, often balancing his rugged hobbies of hunting and fishing with the delicate touch of a craftsman.
A true son of Pittsburgh, Sonny was also a die-hard, lifelong Steelers fan. No matter where the road took him or how many years he spent in Texas, he remained fiercely loyal to the Black and Gold, embodying the grit and spirit of his hometown team.
To the outside world, Sonny was a "hard man," forged by the road and a disciplined life. But those lucky enough to be in his inner circle knew the truth: his heart was a teddy bear, and his bark was always far bigger than his bite. He was a protector and a provider whose tough exterior was merely a shell for the immense love he held for his family.
Sonny is now reunited with his beloved wife and soulmate, Nova Jean, and his son-in-law, Darrell Sr. His memory will be carried forward by his children Steven Waldschmidt and his wife, Diane, Lisa Jones and David Kirkland, and Mark Waldschmidt and his wife, Traci
He was a proud grandfather to Darrell, Hollie, Megan, Chelsea, Kylar, Sara, Caroline, Kelci, and husband Miguel. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren Hayven, Jaylen, Journie, Ryder, Jakobe, and Nash, and his great-great-grandchild, Aires.
The family will gather to honor Elmer’s life at a viewing on April 25, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Grace Gardens Funeral Home & Crematorium, 8220 Woodway Dr, Woodway, Texas, with a graveside service following at Flint Creek Cemetery, The Grove, commencing at 2:00 p.m.
Sonny’s story was a tapestry woven with threads of sacrifice, artistry, and grit. He was a mighty protector with the soul of a gentle artist, and while his passing leaves a profound void, his family finds comfort in knowing that he is finally at rest. He was a beacon of strength who will be forever treasured and never forgotten.
The family wishes to thank Altus Hospice for their loving care, especially Micah Burgess and Beverly Burch.
