Elzie Earl Knecht, 86, of Hewitt, Texas, passed away peacefully at his home, with his loving daughter, Michelle, grandson, Daniel, and dogs by his side, on July 1, 2026.

Born on February 24, 1940, in Marlin, Texas, to Edward and Ella Knecht, Elzie was a man whose quiet strength, generous heart, and unwavering devotion to his family left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

At just 17 years old, Elzie proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, where he completed his high school education while faithfully serving his country. Following his military service, he made his home in California, where he worked in residential construction, helping rebuild communities by constructing new homes in the aftermath of the Oakland fire. After retiring, Elzie returned home to Central Texas, where he enjoyed the slower pace of life surrounded by family and friends.

Those who knew Elzie knew him as a true gentle giant—a soft-hearted, kind, old-school gentleman who never hesitated to lend a helping hand. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and someone who believed in taking care of others before himself. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, and his love for his beloved dogs was evident to all who knew him.

Elzie found happiness in life's simple pleasures. He loved fishing, cooking meals for those he cared about, and faithfully cheering on the Baylor Lady Bears basketball team. He invested countless hours in his community as a Little League coach and proudly served as a 4-H swine leader, encouraging and mentoring young people through the years.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sandra Knecht; his son, Edward Knecht; his parents, Edward and Ella Knecht; his sister, Caroline Gail Knecht; and his twin brother, Edward Gerald Knecht.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Jacqueline Knecht and Michelle Leslie-Knecht; his grandchildren, Daniel Knecht, Michael Chaudhry, Evan Burgess, Alexandra Moore and husband Mike, Lindsay Shepherd and husband Cody, Jonathan Knecht, Dylan Knecht, and Megan Knecht; his great-grandchildren, Isabella, Cole, TyLyn, Zailey, Easton, Harper, and Willow; his brother, Morris Knecht; his nephew, Dwayne Knecht; his niece, Kathy Riley; along with numerous extended family members and dear friends who will miss his gentle spirit.

The family will receive friends during a visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 17, 2026, at Grace Gardens Funeral Home. A funeral service celebrating Elzie's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2026, also at Grace Gardens Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Robinson Cemetery.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to his Gentiva Hospice nurse, Christy, for the extraordinary love, compassion, and exceptional care she provided to Elzie during his final journey. Your kindness brought comfort not only to Elzie, but to his entire family, and will never be forgotten.
