Gene Bookout, born May 10, 1936, in San Bernardino, California, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2026, in Waco, Texas.

Gene’s early years were spent in California, where he attended school and began to shape the values and skills that would define his lifetime. His sense of adventure and independence led him down a professional path as a truck driver for Industrial Asphalt and an owner-operator truck driver at Sandcastle Trucking. Gene took pride in his work and brought not only a strong work ethic to his endeavors but also an unwavering sense of responsibility. Through miles traveled and challenges met, he earned the respect of all those with whom he worked.

Gene was a man known for his remarkable generosity and kindness. He would never hesitate to provide help to anyone in need and seemed to have an inexhaustible resourcefulness; if there was something to be fixed or figured out, Gene was the one to call. He had an innate ability to connect with strangers, often finding friendship where others might not have looked. His open-heartedness touched many lives over the years.

Those who knew Gene will remember his joyful spirit and his many passions. He had a lifelong love of motorcycles and found great joy in sharing that passion with those he loved. He proudly taught each of his daughters, as well as his father-in-law, how to ride, creating memories that reflected his adventurous spirit, patience, and encouragement.  He loved to drive his family up and down the west coast to sight see and visit his numerous friends. Another enduring love was Snoopy. For more than fifty years, Gene collected Snoopy memorabilia—one much-beloved Snoopy even had a wardrobe all its own. His 90th birthday was topped with a Snoopy cake, a testament to the happiness these cherished keepsakes brought him. Another simple pleasure was his fondness for chocolate malts, especially those made in his father-in-law’s drug store using the original malt maker.

Gene’s family held a central place in his heart, and he leaves behind a loving and devoted family who will continue to cherish his memory. He is survived by his daughters, Kim, Lori, Vicki, and Linda; his sons-in-law, Tom and David; his honorary son, Tony; his grandchildren, Jessica, Adrianna, Natalie, Tyler, Austen, Tanner, and Nikota; his great-grandson, Bohdi; his brother, John; and his dear friend, Joan. Each of them carries a unique memory and a deep sense of gratitude for the time shared with Gene.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Karen.

Gene Bookout’s life was a testament to generosity, resourcefulness, and the enduring bonds of family and friendship. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him, and his gentle, giving spirit will continue to inspire generations to come.
