Dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle James Stanley “Jim” Chasteen passed away in Waco, Texas on December 13, 2025, at the age of 80. Jim's life was marked by his dedication to his family, quiet selflessness, strong work ethic, and love for the waters of the Texas Gulf Coast.

Jim was born on September 27, 1945, to Edith (Eacret) Chasteen and Lester K. Chasteen in Harlingen, Texas. Growing up, he lived in multiple communities of South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley including Monte Alto, Mission, Pleasanton, and Redgate near Edinburg. His lifelong love of saltwater fishing started with family fishing trips to the Arroyo Colorado where his folks taught him to catch redfish and flounder. He raised and showed livestock including a pig that won first prize at a county fair. Jim played sports in school including football and ran track at Edinburg High School, where he graduated in 1964.

After taking some courses at Pan American College, Jim enlisted in the United States Navy. He served on the USS Simon Lake (AS-33) in Holy Loch, Scotland, and on the USS Skill (MSO-471) in Charleston, South Carolina, achieving the rank of Engineman Second Class. Jim served honorably from 1966 to 1970.

In 1967 while stationed at Naval Station Great Lakes near Chicago for training, he met his future wife and life-long companion Lois Jean Bourque. Jim and Lois’ relationship grew as they wrote letters to each other while he was in Scotland. After the Navy, Jim moved to Chicago and they got married on December 19th, 1970, in Palos Park, Illinois.

In 1972, Jim and Lois moved back to the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, where he worked as an Industrial Mechanic in the produce packing industry and they started their family. In 1993 the family moved from Mission, Texas to Temple, Texas where his kids grew up and graduated high school. Jim was a dedicated provider with a selfless work-ethic. He had a knack for all things mechanical and was known for being able to fix just about anything. While living in Temple, Jim worked in multiple industries until he retired in 2014.

Jim was a devoted family man and enjoyed spending time and exploring sites around Texas with his wife, kids, and later his grandkids. Besides his wife and family, his great passion was fishing the Texas Gulf Coast. He loved fishing for redfish with his sister Anita in the bays around Galveston and San Luis Pass. Some of his happiest memories were spending time in Galveston fishing and playing cards with his family.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Lois Bourque Chasteen; children, Andrew (Brittany) Chasteen, Mark (Amanda) Chasteen, and Amy (Andrew) Chasteen Raines; sister, Anita Stalcup; sister-in-law Sophie Chasteen; and grandchildren, Derek and Cassandra Chasteen. He was preceded in death by his father, Lester K. Chasteen; mother, Edith Eacret Chasteen; and brothers Bennie, Kenneth, and George Chasteen.
