Myrna Joyce Mathis-Dennis, a cherished and vibrant soul whose life was marked by dedication, independence, and a commanding presence, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026, in Waco, Texas. Born on February 2, 1931, in Walnut Springs, Texas, Joyce’s journey was one of steadfast commitment and spirited enthusiasm.

Joyce attended La Vega High School, laying the foundation for a life enriched by knowledge and community involvement. She devoted thirty years to a distinguished career at Texas Instruments, where her contributions were greatly valued. Following her retirement, she continued to serve and inspire others through her work at Austin Community College.

Known for her sassy, independent, and spunky nature, Joyce was a woman who could brighten any room. She embraced life with a zest that extended beyond her professional endeavors into her many hobbies and interests. An aficionado of fashion and sewing, she expressed her creativity not only through her style but also through her ability to play the piano by ear—a testament to her artistic spirit and love for music. Shopping was another joy that added sparkle to her everyday life.

Joyce’s family and friends were central to her heart. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Deborah Cobb, and her husband, Brink; her daughter-in-law, Theresa Mathis; grandchildren Holly King and her husband Aaron, Beau Cobb and his wife Ashley, Laura Geck and her husband Brian, Cody Mathis and his wife Crystal, and Victoria Mathis. Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren Tyson, Ella, Madi, Mason, Molly, Lucy, Evan, Landon, Nate, Nevaeh, and Wyatt. She is survived by her younger sister, Ruby Rogers.

Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dubert Mathis; her second husband, Leo Dennis; and her son, Bryan Mathis. 

She departed this life with her loved ones by her side, comforted and surrounded by those who cherished her dearly. Joyce Mathis leaves behind a legacy of strength, love, and unyielding spirit. She will be remembered always for her vibrant personality and the indelible mark she left on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Her family will have a private service at a later date to celebrate her.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to First Methodist Church, Cobbs Drive.
