Leon Dobbs

August 26, 1928 — May 18, 2022

Waco, Texas

Leon Dobbs was born on August 26, 1928, at his grandparent’s family farm in Lincoln County Oklahoma. After graduating from Seminole High School, he entered the US Navy to serve as a Radioman Seaman in the Pacific. After an honorable discharge as USN WWII veteran, he married Ginny “the love of his life”.  He graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a BBA in Accounting & Business Law. He served as a forensic CPA and was a Special Agent with the FBI for 25 years (1954–1979) in Detroit, Norfolk, Kansas City, Wash., DC Headquarters, ASAC in St. Louis and SAC (Special Agent in Charge) in El Paso. Leon was able to retire at 55 and enjoyed traveling with Ginny to all 50 states (visiting 48 in their motor home).

He was adventurous, curious, liked to learn new things and meet new people.  With his positive attitude mixed with a servant’s heart and infectious smile, he easily made friends and influenced people everywhere they traveled for three decades.  In 1996, Leon and Ginny settled in the Waco area to be centrally located to their four children, twelve grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren; his sisters, nieces, nephews and lots of cousins.

In his youth, Leon was an agile athlete. He played football in high school and at the University of Oklahoma.  As an adult he enjoyed playing tennis, waterskiing, boating, golfing, bowling, hunting and fishing.  He was a worthy competitor when he played card games (especially bridge) and enjoyed teaching his grandkids how to play cards, bingo and board games. He sure liked to win, but was always respectful and congratulated his opponents on a “game well played” when he lost.

Leon had a passion for music.  He loved to whistle and sing especially with his cousin, Wayne’s kids.  Although he couldn’t read music he played the piano, harmonica and could literally pick up any instrument and sound out a tune by ear.  He was a very talented dancer who dazzled others with jitterbug, ballroom and square dancing with his loving and talented wife, Ginny for almost 70 years.

He was a natural born leader (first born with two younger sisters) and sure liked to be in charge.  Leon actively participated in his children’s activities as a swim official to football commissioner, booster club and PTA president.  He encouraged all of his children and grandchildren to graduate from college and pursue their dreams. Leon was very involved in all of his children’s lives helping to shape their love for Jesus with a strong foundation of trust, honesty, and good stewardship.

Leon loved God, his family, friends and serving others in the church and communities throughout his lifetime. Leon came to know the Lord at an early age and as his faith grew stronger, so did the spiritual gift of exhortation and his compassion for others. He “walked the talk”.  He remained truly grateful to those around him and his sweet spirit shined through even the thickest fogginess during the late stages of dementia. God is so great!  Leon’s witness will live on as a legacy to all who knew him.
