Minnie Mae (Garrett) Haney

February 28, 1931 — December 3, 2021

Waco, Texas

Minnie Mae Haney passed away to the Lord and joined her loved ones in Heaven on December 3, 2021.  She was born in Yoakum, Tx on Feb. 28, 1931.  Mae graduated from Yoakum High School at the age of 16.  With her father’s permission, she moved to Corpus Christi where her sister, Martha (Kitten), was attending beauty college.  Mae worked as executive secretary to the owner of Lichtenstein’s Dept. Store.  She met her beloved husband, Pete, in Corpus Christi.  Mae was a blessing and most loving mother in raising their 6 children.  After raising her family, Mae worked as a certified pre-school teacher for 20 years.  Her life-long wisdom, kindness and compassion was felt by all who knew her.  Mae lived the last 6 years of her life in Waco, but she always held dear her ties to country life in Yoakum and city life in Corpus Christi.

Mae was a member of Theresians of St. Mary, Eucharistic Minister, Holy Family Guild, Columbian Ladies and Lebasyr Heritage Society in Corpus Christi; and Waco Ladies Newcomers & Neighbors.  She was in many social groups and Bible studies at Harbors Senior Living in Corpus Christi and Lakeshore Senior Living and Cottages at Oak Springs in Waco.  Mae was a parishioner and member of Horizons at St. Jerome Catholic Church.

Mae is predeceased by her loving husband of 61 years, Pete M. Haney; her parents, Jack & Mattie Vick Garrett; siblings: Charles, Inez, J.D., Bessie Lee, Edd, Earl, Margaret, Jake, Martha, Sylvan and AG; grandson, Kevin Alfred VandenBout; son-in-law, Hank VandenBout; many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Mae is survived by her 6 children: Michael (Cathy) Haney, Frances VandenBout, Barbara (Ed) VandenBout, Gary (Andra) Haney, Anthony (Rene) Haney and Patrick Haney; 12 grandchildren: Mike (Katie) Haney, Kirk Haney, Amy (Mike) Becker, Josh (Sarah) VandenBout, Justin (Lauren) VandenBout, Nick (Hannah) VandenBout, Tara (Rob) Davis, Elyse Haney, Hanna (Mustafa) Muhana, Luke Haney, Levi Haney and Roy Haney; 11 great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces; and friends.

Mae loved spending time and keeping in touch with family and friends; helping those in need; dancing; reading; wildflowers in the spring; traveling; water aerobics; walking on the beach; cooking American and Lebanese foods; playing cards and dominoes; gardening; and telling stories of her youth.

The family extends their sincere gratitude to Dr. Clint McHenry for his professional and compassionate care the past 6 years.
