Norman Bass Gowens, age 87, of Waco, Texas, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior on June 30, 2026. Though our hearts are heavy with sorrow, we find comfort and peace in God's promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ.

Born on September 21, 1938 in Stamford, Texas as one of six children, Norman lived a life rooted in faith, love, and service. He honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant. He carried the values of honor, integrity, and selfless service throughout his life, both in and out of uniform.

A faithful member and deacon of Waco Primitive Baptist Church, he served the Lord and his church family with humility, compassion, and steadfast devotion. His faith was not only something he professed—it was evident in the way he loved others, offered encouragement, and lived each day with quiet strength and grace. One of his greatest joys was lifting his voice in praise during church services. His love for singing reflected the joy and hope he found in the Lord, and those who worshipped alongside him will remember both his faithful presence and the heartfelt way he sang God's praises.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend who sought to honor God in every aspect of his life. Whether at home, at work, or in his community, he was known for his kindness, integrity, gentle spirit, and willingness to help others. He treasured time with his family and leaves behind a legacy of faith that will continue to bless generations to come.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of nearly 56 years, Priscilla “Tippy” Gowens, parents Sylvester and Minnie Gowens, sister Gwendolyn “Gwen” Gentry, and brother Bernard Gowens. 

He is lovingly remembered by his two daughters Shelly Raines and husband Charley, and Kari Gowens. He was “PaPa” to five grandchildren: Jeffrey Raines and wife, Sarah; Kristen and husband, Jonathan Eaves; Brian Raines and wife, Tiffany; Morgan and husband, James Murchison; and Kenzie and husband, Aaron Bowley. He was an especially proud “Great PaPa” to 8 great-grandchildren and one on the way. As well as his siblings Clifford Gowens and wife, Lenora, Jimmie Gowens and wife, Sandi, Geraldine Gentry and husband Travis. Norman also leaves behind many cherished relatives, friends, and his beloved church family, all of whom were blessed by his faithful example.

Visitation services will be held on Tuesday evening July 7 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Grace Gardens Funeral Home. A celebration of his life and faith will be held on Wednesday July 8 at 10:00 AM at Grace Gardens, followed by a graveside service at 11:30 AM at Waco Memorial Park. Family and friends are invited to gather to remember his life, give thanks to God for the many ways He worked through him, and rejoice in the assurance that he is now at peace in his heavenly home. Pallbearers for the service include Charley Raines, Brian Raines, Jeffrey Raines, Jonathan Eaves, James Murchison, and Aaron Bowley. Honorary pallbearers include Jimmie Gowens, Travis Gentry, Jimmy Fannin, and Ronney Baethge. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of Norman to Waco Primitive Baptist Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

As we mourn his passing, we cling to the hope of God's Word: "His Lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord." (Matthew 25:23, KJV)

We also find comfort in the words of Jesus: "Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live." (John 11:25, KJV)

Though he is no longer with us in this life, his unwavering faith, servant's heart, joyful praise, and abiding love remain a lasting testimony to God's grace. We rejoice in the assurance that he has been welcomed into his eternal home, where we can imagine him once again lifting his voice in praise to his Savior.
