Ross Smith

Ross Earl Smith, Jr., a devoted family man, passed away peacefully at his home in Waco, Texas.Born on May 3, 1935, in Fisher County, Texas, to Ross Earl Smith and Della Gaynell Whited, Ross lived a life defined by hard work, a sense of adventure, and an unwavering love for his family. Ross was a man of many passions. 

In his youth, he enjoyed boxing, playing in the band, and Spanish class, with a highlight being a memorable class trip to Mexico.Ross served his country in the United States Army, enlisting in February 1958 and serving until his discharge from Ft. Carson, Colorado. Following his military service, he pursued his education at Arlington State, eventually embarking on a distinguished 38-year career with Texas Utilities (TXU) in Sweetwater, Texas. He was a steady and reliable supervisor until his retirement. He often shared the secret to his long career with his family, advising them to "find a job you love, because then you will never work a day in your life".

On January 21, 1961, Ross married the love of his life, Annette Gillihan, in Big Spring, Texas. Together, they built a beautiful life and shared 65 years of marriage, settling in the Waco community in 2006. In his later years, he became a traveler. Alongside Annette, he explored all 50 states in their RV, cruised the seas, and traveled through parts of Mexico and Canada. While Ross explored, his favorite "destination" was always wherever his family gathered. As a husband, he provided a masterclass in devotion, walking together with Annette through six decades of life’s changing seasons.

When he wasn't on the road, Ross could be found reading or researching genealogy. His legacy isn't just found in the records he so meticulously researched, but in the living breath of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, to whom he was lovingly known as "Pa." He was a fountain of practical wisdom for them, teaching them how to read a paper map and always reminding them to always have a tire inflator before heading out on any journey.

A faithful member of Richfield Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Ross’s faith was the quiet engine of his life. He believed in service to others, staying active in the community through the Elks Lodge and the Sunrise Optimist U.S. Girls Softball Program.

Ross’s greatest pride was his family. He is survived by his wife, Annette Smith; daughter, Jada Bryant and husband John; and step-son, John Williams and wife Kim. His memory will be cherished by his grandchildren, who adored their Pa: Christopher Parsons (wife LeeAnna), Ben Bryant, and Sarah Brasher (husband Austin); step-grandchildren, Lauren Williams and Autymn Williams (wife Nicole); and his great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy: Taylor Parsons, Madison Brasher, Nealee Parsons, Mallory Brasher, and Mack Brasher.

Ross was preceded in death by his parents, Ross Smith and Gaynell Henry, and his daughter, Cheryl Smith.
