A memorial service celebrating her life will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at First Presbyterian Church, 1100 Austin Avenue, Waco, with Rev. Dr. Leslie King officiating. Interment will follow at the First Presbyterian Church Columbarium.

Sarah Elizabeth Mitchell was born to Horace Mitchell and Virginia Lewis Mitchell on June 15, 1940, in Little Rock, Arkansas.

She graduated from the University of Arkansas with a Teaching Certificate.

She worked in Washington, D.C. for Arkansas Senator John McClellan until she met and married Randy Preddy.

The couple lived near Louisville, Kentucky, and later Dayton, Ohio, from 1965 to 1977. During that time Sarah served as a special education teacher and tutor.

Sarah and Randy moved to Waco, Texas, in 1977. Randy served as Publisher of the Waco Tribune-Herald from 1977 to 1996, and later taught at Baylor University.

Sarah was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder and a deacon and in numerous other roles over the years. She was a member of the Junior League of Waco. She was a member of the Chi Omega Fraternity (sorority) and served on the house corporation at Baylor University. She was an active member of the Waco chapter of P.E.O. Sisterhood for many years, serving that organization as Chaplain.

Sarah loved traveling with friends and family. Her favorite destination was Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she loved visiting the many art galleries located there.

Sarah loved dogs, first her cockapoo Twinkle and later standard poodles Angel, Shadow, Bella, Buster, and Rainbow.

Sarah’s parents, her nephew Monroe Cartwright Frank III, and her loving husband of 46 years, Capt. Raymond Randall Preddy, USN, Ret., preceded her in death.

Sarah is survived by her two children, Cmdr. Lewis Long Preddy, USN, Ret., of Jacksonville, Florida, and Dr. Tiffany Gregg Preddy of Ellicott City, Maryland, their spouses Judge Rose Marie K. Preddy and John (Jack) MacLean Morton, five grandchildren, Capt. Abraham Joseph Preddy, USAF, Sara Virginia Preddy, Stephen Salem Preddy, Henry Raymond Morton, and Anna Elizabeth Morton, her sister Virginia (Gigi) Frank Jones, niece Dr. Elizabeth Lyons Frank, and nephews Raymond Roddy Frank and James Mitchell Frank.

Sarah’s children would like to thank the staff at Baylor Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas Oncology, M.D. Anderson Medical Center in Houston, and several skilling nursing clinics who treated her with dignity and respect. They would also like to thank her home caretakers in Waco, including Alina and Betty, who loved her and took great care of her the last two years, treating her as family. They also thank her hairdresser Lita, who made house calls over the last two years.

A special thanks to Claudia and her daughters Brandy and Candy, who took care of both Sarah and her dogs for many years.

Finally, they want to thank the many friends she had over her many years in Waco. Her children often offered Sarah the chance to move to Maryland or Florida, but Sarah always told them her friends and her church were in Waco, so Waco was where she wanted to live.

Sarah feels she is now in the loving arms of God.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Presbyterian Church, the Humane Society of Central Texas, and Fuzzy Friends.
