Susan Phillips, a devoted nurse, caring mother, and cherished friend, passed away on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, in Waco, Texas. Born on May 5, 1944, in Port Arthur, Texas, Susan’s life was marked by her commitment to caring for others and the joy she found in living life to its fullest. A Celebration of her remarkable life will be celebrated during a visitation and viewing on Friday, April 10th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at Grace Gardens.
A proud graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur, Susan pursued her passion for nursing at Lamar University, where she earned her Registered Nursing Degree. Susan launched her career with dedication and skill at Methodist Hospital in Houston and later at Ben Taub Trauma Hospital in Houston. Her journey culminated at Providence Hospital in Waco, where she served as the director of Nursing on the third floor. There, she earned an esteemed reputation as a true legend in her field, embodying leadership and compassion until her retirement. Even after stepping back from hospital administration, Susan’s calling to care continued as she became a travel nurse, lending her expertise throughout the nation.
Susan was known for her vibrant and joyful personality. She always had a great time and was a loyal friend to many. Her caring nature extended deeply into her family life, where she was present for her children whenever they needed her. Beyond her medical career and family commitments, Susan had a zest for life that was reflected in her hobbies and interests. She delighted in cruises, gambling, wine tasting, and traveling the world, embracing each experience with enthusiasm.
She is deeply mourned by her surviving family members: her daughters, Michelle Peacock and Clinton Joiner, and Nicole Lednicky and her husband Clayton. She was also a proud grandmother to Chloe Kuklies, Tyler Maddox, and Carter Maddox, as well as a loving great-grandmother to Cash Branch. Her enduring friendships were exemplified by her lifelong companions, affectionately known as "The Mermaids," who stood beside her through life’s many chapters.
Susan was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jim Phillips, and her three brothers, whose memories she held dear throughout her life.
Susan Phillips leaves behind a legacy of compassion, strength, and joy. Her contributions to nursing, the love she shared with her family, and the warmth she brought to her friends will never be forgotten. She will be remembered not only for her professional achievements but for the generosity of spirit that touched the lives of all who knew her. Her passing is a profound loss to the communities she served and the family who loved her deeply.
