Terry Clayton Smith, affectionately known to many as “Gilligan,” passed away unexpectedly on February 9, 2026, at the age of 69. Born on August 15, 1956, in Richmond, Texas, Terry’s larger-than-life personality and warm heart touched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Growing up in Richmond, he attended Temple High School, where he began to forge his path in life. Terry honed his skills as a woodworker, creating beautiful cabinets that spoke to the love and care he put into his craft. Later in life, he worked as a stocker at Walmart, where his familiar presence, friendly greetings, and steady work ethic were appreciated by coworkers and customers alike. Whether working with his hands or helping keep shelves stocked, Terry took pride in what he did.
Terry was known for his endearing stubbornness and profound emotional depth, qualities that shaped his relationships with family and friends. He had a special knack for making people smile, whether through his cheerful greetings or his infectious laugh while watching his favorite game shows. His love for sports kept him animated, and he found joy in every moment spent watching sporting events, scratching off lottery tickets, and bowling alongside his beloved mother in their local league.
Family was everything to Terry. He is survived by his dear sister, Charlene Colson, and her husband, Troy, who cherished him deeply. He also leaves behind numerous cousins and amazing friends whose lives he enriched with laughter and kindness. His beloved cat, Sabath, was a constant companion, and he often referred to Valerie Colson as his second mom, a reflection of the deep bonds he formed with those around him.
Terry’s passing came after he fought valiantly through a recent health crisis. Despite the challenges he faced, he remained steadfast in his love for life, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those he touched. He is preceded in death by his father, Charles Clayton Smith; his mother, Agnes Edith Kovarcik Smith; and his sister, Sheri Lynn Smith, all of whom hold a cherished place in his memory.
As we remember Terry, we celebrate a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering connections. His sweet spirit and goofy nature will be profoundly missed but forever remembered in the stories shared among family and friends. Rest gently, dear Gilligan, knowing you were deeply loved.
