William "Dale" Hollis

Woodway, Texas

William Dale Hollis of Woodway, TX passed peacefully in his sleep at his home of over 40 years on Tuesday the 22nd. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. at Saint Alban’s Episcopal Church with The Reverend Aaron M. G. Zimmerman officiating. A private burial will follow at a later date.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, well wishers please make a donation to the charity of their own choice in his memory.

Dale, as his friends knew him, was born in Springhill, Louisiana to Sercie Dale Hollis and Elizabeth Emily (Moncrief) Hollis. He grew up in Louisiana, the eldest of four children. His childhood was spent getting into much mischief in the countryside with his younger brother John, and sisters Mary and Delores.

Graduating from Natchez High School in Mississippi in 1960, Dale went on to attend Baylor University. There he met his future wife of 50 years, Caren Alayne (King) Hollis, his mentor and dear friend Professor Robert Lynn Reid, and many lifelong friends. While at Baylor, Dale obtained both Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees.

Dale was a lifelong lover of history and learning. He dedicated his life to cultivating the minds of future generations of Texas youths, educating them about past events and their effects on the world today. He taught for more than 40 years, the majority at Midway High School.

Dale was fortunate to spend many summers traveling throughout Europe,  first as a young man and later often with a gaggle of students in tow. There, he developed a deep love for exploring Europe that was shared with his family and students. He was delighted to be able to introduce students to the many places they had been taught about in his classroom. He was a lifelong lover of music, travel, and Baylor football.

In his retirement, Dale spent much of his time continuing to read about history, politics, philosophy, and spirituality. He was a fan of gardening and baking, often sharing his baked goods with family and friends, much to their delight.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters Mary Alice Hollis, and Delores Ann (Hollis) Richie. He is survived by his wife Caren (King) Hollis; children, Kathryn Alayne Hollis and Robert Reid Hollis; his brother John Hollis and wife Carlon, as well as many nieces and nephews, close friends and thousands of former colleagues and students whose lives he had the pleasure of being a part of.

Our world is a better place for his having been here.
